The 13th Annual Home Gardeners' School presented by Penn State Cooperative Extension offers you a day full of gardening ideas to prepare you for the upcoming growing season.
We are pleased to offer you a wide assortment of classes, over four different sessions, so you may participate in varied classes throughout the day. Our keynote speaker, Doug Tallamy, Professor and Chair of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, will lead off the event with "Bringing Nature Home." The day will overflow with presenters eagar to share their knowledge and experience on varied subjects selected to enhance your gardening abilities and pleasure. Our speakers include Penn State Extension Educators, a PA Certified Horticulturist, and Penn State Master Gardeners among others.
Spend the morning learning about ''Green Products'' for your landscape or adaptive gardening, and then find out about growing roses or how to design your garden. Round out the afternoon with pollinators or succulents and finish up with edible landscaping or building and running your own greenhouse. Breaks between sessions will give you the opportunity to view the informational exhibits that will be on display and to visit the various vendors who will be available for your gardening needs. Morning refreshments and a box lunch are included.

Speakers
Doug Tallamy is Professor & Chair of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware. He has authored numerous research articles and has taught Insect Taxonomy, Behavior Ecology and other related courses for 28 years. His latest book is Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants.
William H. Becker is a Professor Emeritus of Religion at Bucknell University where he taught for 33 years.Since becoming a Master Gardener in 2001, he has taught workshops on composting, growing strawberries,and growing roses; and has written Green Thumb Corner columns published in The Daily Item.
Alan Michael is an Extension Educator -- Floriculture at Penn State. He started his flower trials at the Southeast Research and Extension Center in Landisville with 42 geranium varieties. Now there are more than 1300 varieties of vegetative and seed plant material from all over the world, making this the largest trial in the Northeast. He started the Master Gardener program in PA in October 1988. He lives in Halifax.
Mary Jo R. Gibson is the Coordinator of the Master Gardeners in Columbia County. She teaches science to students at Berwick Area Middle School and works with 4-H and scout groups on projects related to plants, entomology, and wildlife.
Rick Johnson is a Senior Extension Associate for Penn State. He is the Arboretum horticulturist and volunteer coordinator at the H. O. Smith Botanic Gardens in The Arboretum at Penn State. He previously served as Urban Specialist for Penn State’s Pesticide Program.
Julia M. Marano is a Master Gardener in Northumberland County. She has over 30 years experience in all phases of community and land development projects.
Dennis and Maryann Mawhinney are both Master Gardeners in York County. He is known for his enthusiastic, humorous presentations. She is an RN and enjoys combining her gardening and nursing knowledge in presenting programs on safe gardening.
Sharon Miller is an RN. She owns and operates the SM Miller Greenhouse in Elimsport. Sharon is a member of the McEwensville Garden Club.
Erica Beadle Shaffer is the nursery manager at the Highland Gardens in Camp Hill, having worked there 20years. She is a PA Certified Horticulturist, landscape designer, consultant, speaker, and writer.

Here are the Door prize donors.
All classes are held in the high school auditorium in theater seating. After the keynote address the auditorium is separated into two sections by a room divider. Each side has a separate sound system. No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium. The box lunch includes a selection of a chicken salad wrap or a ham and cheese wrap or a pre-ordered vegetarian wrap (pre-ordered on registration form); chicken noodle soup; chips, popcorn, or pretzels; and water, coffee, tea, iced tea, or lemon aid. Morning refreshments: coffee, tea, juice, pastries.

Cancellation: If the Mifflinburg School System is closed on 6 March our event is cancelled. The fee is non-refundable.
